Mammography is a specific type of imaging that uses a low-dose x-ray system for the examination of breasts. A mammography exam, called a mammogram, is used as a screening tool to detect early breast cancer in women experiencing no symptoms, and to detect and diagnose breast disease in women experiencing symptoms such as a lump, pain or nipple discharge. BONE DENSITY USING QCT
Bone Densitometry (QCT) is performed here at Mena Regional using our CT scanner. This gives more accurate results than bone density with DEXA, which is standard in most imaging facilities. The scanning time of QCT is about 15 minutes, whereas DEXA is closer to 30 minutes. QCT measures the inner (trabeculae) of the bone, which is the first area to be changed by Osteoporosis, giving more accurate results of changing bone density. We suggest having these scheduled with your Mammogram appointment as an easy way to ensure both studies are done yearly. If you are at risk for Osteoporosis, insurance and Medicare may allow one per year, so there may be little, if any, out of pocket expense. Osteoporosis is a manageable disease with the current medications. Ask your doctor to schedule your exam today.
